How Do I Adjust The Stroke Length?

While putting together your home automation project, you may have come across a problem. The stroke is too long or too short for the application. Before you return the device to your manufacturer for an exchange, here are a few options that you can try.

Too Long

If your actuator extends past the length you need, there are a few different things you can try. This all depends on how far over the limit it’s going.

Limit Switches

You can try purchasing an external limit switch that, when depressed, will stop the actuator. You just wire the limit switch and place it in a spot where your stroke will hit it. With most limit switches, the device will remain in an extended position until the button is no longer depressed. With every external limit switch that Progressive sends, we also send a diode. The diode overrides the switch and lets you retract when you press the button to retract.

Can I move the internal limit switch?

The limit switch can be moved, but this is only recommended if you have experience with electronics or automation.

Motion Control Systems

Any actuator that is too long can be controlled manually with a control system. Whether you are using a momentary, non-momentary, wireless remote or controls on the box, the device can be stopped before it reaches the endpoint. This component to be monitored whenever it is extending.

The other option is to purchase a momentary rocker switch. Using this type of switch means that when you press the extend button, the actuator will extend, but only for as long as the button is depressed. Using a rocker switch, you can control how far the device will extend, preventing it from going past your limit.

If neither of these options is available your only option is to purchase a different actuator. When selecting, always remember that the stroke length must be added to the length.

Can Progressive cut the stroke size?

No. Cutting the stroke size after the product has been manufactured is unsafe and can damage the unit.

Too Short

If your actuator can’t reach the stroke length, there are fewer options available to you. The most obvious solution is to just mount closer to the end of the application. Other than that you’ll have no option other than to return it for another one. Can I attach something to make the stroke longer?

As long as you are not compromising the design, and you are keeping the function and application safe you can attach something to the end to make it reach further.
